Toddlers and Discipline

Oftentimes we either assume that children that are about one year old are too young to be disciplined, or at the other extreme, we tend to punish them forgetting also that they might not really understand the concept of wrong and right. However, this does not mean that we should not make some attempts to put them in the right; because it is never too early to start as well as it is never too late to start. These are some tips to set you on the part:

  •        Instead of shouting at the kid, it is better to shift his attention to another thing equally interesting. For instance, where the child is scattering the furniture in the house, you could give him some of his toys to play with. Through this medium, you are sending a message that the first act is unacceptable
  •       While it might be good to calm your child’s nerves when he cries, don’t let him blackmail you into acceding to his every demand through his cries. Children have developed defence mechanisms; if he wins once, he will try it again.
  •            Know when to use the word NO! and be firm about it.
  •        Our ego needs a massage once in a while; be sure to praise your child when he does something positive. This way, he knows that it is good to do good
  •      Have a “Time Out” – by merely restricting the child’s movements to a “Corner” when he misbehaves, it will send messages to him – however, limit the time outs to not more than two minutes
  •            Stay clam and try to ignore an unwarranted tantrum – it will blow over when the child realizes that you are not paying heed
  •         At the same time, you will know when to buckle under and accede to the child’s demands
