Baby’s First Steps and Safety Precautions

“My baby just took his first steps; am so excited and I feel on top of the world…”
There is this sense of pride, fulfilment and joy when your little one takes his first steps; it gives you some form of reassurance that truly your baby is really making good developmental progress. At least you can go for walks together with him tagging along. This is not only an exciting stage, for the parents but also for the kids as they are thrilled to know they can move around more freely and so can explore their environment better. This being the case, parents should take extra care to ensure that the kid’s environment is always safe so as to prevent accidents around the kids who are obviously so energised at this stage.
Some basic tips to remember include:

·        Keep all medicines out of reach; the drug shelf should always be locked
·        To avoid poisoning, dangerous liquids e.g. kerosene, paraffin etc, should be kept out of reach and in a safe place as kids might mistake it for water and ingest
·        Make sure fires are always guarded and when cooking, keep the kids as far from the burners as possible in order to prevent burns.
·        Kids are prone to falls and injuries at this stage as they tend to run around a lot so, as much as possible, try to create enough space for them to play around in the house
·        Put safety gates around stairs inside the house to prevent them from falling over
·        Always make sure that your entrance is always locked to prevent them from wandering outside the house
·        Remember this is a period if you are not careful your TV set and home theatre might be destroyed so try as much as possible to place them out of reach and also keep the remotes out of reach as they might put the batteries in their mouths
