Brain Development and the Child

Who wouldn’t want a smart child? While intelligence is mostly associated with the genes, there are things we could do to boost and stimulate the natural intelligence of our kids. Here are a few tips:

  • Interact actively with your child as you are his first teacher
  • Speak to your child as often as possible; you will be surprised how your words register in his brain. Even when you perform simple chores like changing his diaper, talk to him
  • Singing to the baby is another way to engage your child. You do not have to be an adept in singing. Sing your everyday songs, local songs and make up songs about the day’s activities
  • Babies see and associate colours with events; so make sure you have colours of various shapes and sizes laid out. You can buy alphabet or number mats for use at home
  • Read to your baby even when he does not seem to understand what you are reading. The earliest time to start reading to him is now. Let him start interacting with books as early as possible. If possible, read to him everyday
·        Don’t assume he is too little to know
·        Explain things to him in simple but clear terms
·        Use pictures more while teaching him because they understand better
·        Kids are very inquisitive so encourage him to ask questions. Even when you don’t know the answer, make an attempt
·        Playing could be made to be fun and educative as well
·        Interact with mates
·        Use age appropriate materials for teaching him
·        Remember the adage; early to bed, early to rise; makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise. Let your child sleep well and long
·        Make meal times fun and educative for him; you can use place/table mats that have things information on them and indirectly he would be learning all what is on it
·        Make strolling fun and educative by showing him things around the neighbourhood and telling him what they are.
